Places I’ve Been:
Victoria Intl (YYJ) [Link]
End of Canora road near Vancouver Island Helicopters – This seems to be my home away from home. It is a good place to photograph those using runway 09. Eastward down the fence line you can shoot over the top of the fence, good for CF-18s and Alphajets. The lighting is good most of the time.
On Widgeon Drive leading to the Seaplane Base – You can park off the side of the road into the Seaplane Base and walk to the top of the berm by the fence for good landing shots on 09. Again, the lighting should be good here.
Vancouver Intl (YVR) [Link]
Iona Island Causeway – This is my favourite place to spot when at YVR when international flights are using 08 Left. They arrive over the water and present a reasonable opportunity for photographing. Lighting could be better at this location.
Ferguson Rd – This is a fair location when larger traffic is using 26 right. Lighting for photography is not the best.
South Terminal Viewing Platform – This is a good spot for photography as the sun should be behind you but the aircraft are still on the runway so the photos are affected by heat haze.
Calgary Intl (YYC) [Link]
South off McKnight Blvd – This seems to be the traditional spot at YYC for spotting and photography, but not the best lighting most of the day.
North on access road – I haven’t been here in a while, but from what I remember there was no activity on the weekend but was quite busy weekdays. As an alternative, I have parked in the Purolator parking lot at 30 Aero Drive but was always worried I would be asked to move on.
78 Ave NE – I believe I have seen others parked in this area, but again it is all private lots here.
Kelowna (YLW)
I didn’t find a good location to spot from at Kelowna. My visit of Oct 2012 saw a number of WestJet aircraft and is the home base for Kelowna Flightcraft and Carson Air.
